What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are tooth-shaped shells of dental porcelain that can be affixed to the front-facing surface of teeth. They are incredibly lifelike, as dental porcelain looks virtually identical to healthy tooth enamel and can be color-matched to seamlessly blend in with your natural teeth. They’re designed to perfectly fit over the front of a tooth to completely redesign its appearance, which makes them an ideal solution for issues like:

  • Stubborn stains or patches of discoloration
  • Minor chips, cracks, and other damage to the enamel
  • Small gaps or spaces between the teeth
  • Teeth that are too short or somewhat uneven
  • Teeth that are naturally misshapen

The Process of Getting Veneers

If you’re interested in veneers, you’ll meet with one of our Vero Beach cosmetic dentists to ensure they’re the best choice for achieving the goals you have in mind. If they are, then the next step will be preparing your teeth, wherein a small amount of enamel is removed to ensure the veneers will lay flat. Veneers are ultra-thin, about as thick as a contact lens, so preparing your teeth will be quick and virtually painless. We’ll take impressions of your teeth and place temporary veneers so you can test-drive your new smile.

Over the next few days, our in-house dental laboratory will use the impressions we took of your teeth to fabricate your permanent veneers. When they’re ready, you’ll return to our office to have your temporary veneers removed and replaced. We’ll check that your bite feels comfortable and that you’re pleased with your results, and then you’ll be all set to go out and show off your brand-new smile.

Benefits of Veneers

Veneers are one of our most popular cosmetic services, and it’s not difficult to see why! They offer numerous benefits, such as:

  • A Comprehensive Solution: Veneers offer a comprehensive way to address a variety of different dental flaws all at once instead of completing several different procedures for each issue.
  • Fast & Minimally Invasive Treatment: It can take a little as two quick appointments to get your veneers, and only a very thin layer of enamel needs to be removed.
  • Beautiful & Lifelike Results: Once placed, your veneers will be virtually indistinguishable from the appearance of beautiful, healthy teeth.
  • A Long Lifespan: With the proper care, veneers can easily last 15 years or longer.
  • Resistance to Staining & Cracking: Not only is dental porcelain lifelike, but it resists staining and cracking, so you can show off your new smile without worry!

Veneers FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

Whether or not veneers are “permanent” depends on your perspective. They are a permanent commitment in a sense because, after your teeth are modified to support veneers, they will always need some sort of restoration. Otherwise, they may be subject to increased sensitivity. They may also look somewhat odd.

However, it is worth noting that veneers do not last forever. While they are a long-term solution for cosmetic imperfections in teeth, they eventually need to be replaced. Typically, this happens after 10 – 15 years or longer.

Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?

Veneers are sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics” because they can quickly change the appearance of certain types of dental misalignment. For example, they can disguise issues like small gaps between the teeth, minor crookedness, and other very mild orthodontic issues.

However, veneers do not actually move the teeth. Therefore, if your dental misalignment is negatively affecting your oral health in any way, you may need to get braces or clear aligners before you move forward with veneers.

Our team can help you determine the best way to fix crooked teeth.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

You will need to wear temporary veneers for a while during your treatment process. To prevent them from getting damaged or coming off your teeth, you should avoid sticky and hard foods. Temporary veneers also stain more easily than permanent ones, so you may choose to minimize your consumption of highly pigmented items.

Once your permanent veneers are in place, you can resume a fairly normal diet. However, keep in mind that, just like natural teeth, some foods are better for veneers than others. Be careful not to bite into anything too hard (for example, you should not chew on ice). It would also be wise not to overindulge in highly pigmented items; even though veneers resist stains, the natural teeth next to them can still become discolored over time.

Additionally, you should always make food choices that support your oral health. We may need to remove your veneers if you develop cavities or gum disease in the surrounding tissues.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

Veneers are a versatile treatment. If you have just one tooth whose appearance is bothering you, a single veneer might be all you need. Many patients, though, choose to get a full set of veneers to transform all the teeth that are visible when they smile. That can involve the placement of 6 – 8 veneers or more.

During your consultation, we can recommend the number of veneers that will fit your goals and your budget.
